Welcome to Choosy’s official feedback forum. Do you have an idea? Do you recognize a good idea when you see one? I want to hear from you!

Remember to check the Roadmap too and see what’s already planned…

I suggest you...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the “My feedback” filter and select “My open ideas”.

    1. Choosy seems to request NVidia 330M graphics when running

Choosy seems to request that the system switch to the NVidia 330M graphics card rather than integrated graphics when running on the latest Macbook Pro.

This is detected using : http://codykrieger.com/gfxCardStatus/

The downside of this is that it can have a significant impact on battery life, especially given that it's a background/resident app.

I’m currently working on a complete rewrite of the way Choosy displays prompts and dropping CoreAnimation which should resolve this issue.

      • extending support to various media types, not just browser

It would be nice if Choosy could support something other than a browser. Maybe mail applications, Media Players or something else.

        • add support for mailto links. E.g. Open Mail or Entourage

If I click a mailto link within a web site, I would like the option to contact the link on a personal basis (using Mail) or for business purposes (using Entourage)

          • Allow the browser selection to be Spaces aware

I'd love to be able to select my default browser based on the current space. This means i can use separate browsers in separate spaces for programming/work vs. personal/leisure.

It would be even better if I could set domains/regex patterns on a per space basis, allowing me to restrict the current space to certain domains and force me to focus on the job in hand!

            • Fix bug where Choosy is disabled on startup

Choosy is installed and working beautifully, and set as standard browser in Safari. Until I restart... Almost every time I restart (I'd say 80-90 % of the time), Choosy has disabled itself in the System Preferences and Safari has taken the position of default browser.

So the first thing I need to do when I restart the computer is to go to System Preferences, click OK in the "Choosy is disabled" dialogue box (that's a very annoying little box), and check "Enable Choosy for links" and Enable Choosy for HTML files".

This was the case in the beta versions and… more

I’m still looking into this, but it seems to have more to do with the OS than Choosy.

This issues can sometimes be related to using File Vault. If you are using File Vault you could try disabling it. See this post on SuperUser for more information:
                http://superuser.com/questions/2735

If you’re not using File Vault there are some suggestions about resetting your Launch Services settings in this Apple Forum thread: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8965818

If none of that helps, please leave a comment letting me know.

                Sorry for the inconvenience.

              • add an option to specify behaviour based on network location

it would be useful to have different behaviours for different network location, e.g., I would:
                - open in Safari when I'm at home
                - open in Firefox when I'm at office #1
                - etc.

                  • Temp freezing the computer or visual bug when clicking on a link

I'd love to have this figured out to narrow it down more, but at apparently random times when I click on a link, instead of choosy showing up, the computer will freeze for ~15 seconds. Background task will continue (itunes playing music, etc.) but user input does nothing (cursor won't move, can't alt-tab, can't switch spaces, etc.)
After the ~15 seconds is up, everything goes back to normal. If I click a 2nd time at that point, choosy will mostly likely behave normally.

Also, and possibly related is choosy will be visually bugged.

This looks like it might be related to driver issues with the Nvidia Geforce 7300 graphics card.

Could those who are following this thread leave comments indicating which graphics card their Mac uses?

Thanks for your patience while I fix this.

                          • Implement URL rewriter

It would be useful in some cases that a URL has to be rewritten based on search and replace (incl. RegExp) some strings in a URL and send it to a specific browser.

E.g.: Click on the URL http://system.xy.com will be rewritten to http://system.ab.com and then will be opened with Camino

When I try to open Choosy it crashes System Preferences. I will see Loading Choosy... for a while in the title bar and then get a message that SysPref "quit unexpectedly". I have tried 1.03 and 1.02 both with the same result. I am on 64 bit Snow Leopard, 2009 MBP.

                              Any ideas?

Right now if you specify the app as Dashboard, it doesn't actually follow the rule. It would be nice to work with Dashboard. Or even individual widgets.

                                    You have left! (?) (thinking…)

There are several improvements to this in the 0.9.3 release:
                                    1) Choosy properly registers itself with the OS as a viewer app for HTML files
                                    2) There are separate settings for using Choosy as the default app for HTML files and the default app for HTTP URLs
                                    3) The advanced behaviour rules system allows you to set up specific rules for local files (e.g. I have them set to open in TextMate by default but if I hold shift while opening the file I get a TextMate/Firefox/Validator prompt)

I’m hoping updates should solve the problems you’ve been having, let me know in the comments if there are any more issues. If not I’ll close this issue.

There was another issue that’s just been fixed: There was a problem opening local files that had special characters (e.g. spaces) in the file names.

                                  • Allow skinning of the browser selection dialog

It would be neat if we could really tweak the UI of the browser selection dialog. I'm thinking similar to the way QuickSilver allows different skins for their interface. This way, Choosy can really fit into the overall aesthetic the user has set up.

                                    • search google in not just Safari

I'd love to have the option to search google in whatever browser is currently running. For some reason, searching Google from a cocoa-app always opens Safari, which isn't always the best choice.

                                      • Add eMail Choosy option - this is a bigger problem imho - Mail versus Entourage selection

Same problem exists in OS X with email. I always want to send somthing as email from "sento" in the app like word or powerpoint or preview or while priniting or just plain clicking a mailto" tag. I use "Mail" for personal email and Entourage for my work email.
I would like a similar popup of mail clients as options when ever a "send to" , "send page as", mailto tags are clicked.

                                          • fix bug where active window loses focus

In NetNewsWire, for example, pressing return on an article brings up Choosy. Pressing return again chooses my preferred browser, which opens the link in the background, as I have set in NetNewsWire, but then the NNW window is no longer active, so I must click the mouse to bring it back to the foreground.
